Here is an update on what we are studying in each subject:
Reading - We began our novel study on the book Coraline. Coraline is a young, bored girl who discovers that a bricked-up wall behind a door in her flat leads to another world, with another mother and another father. When she tries to go back, she realizes that some doors are better left unopened.
We have been focusing on the plot line in order to help the students with their own fiction writing. We will be having comprehension quizzes every five chapters. Please remind your child to read at least 20 minutes per school night.
Writing - Our business letters turned out very nicely. Many of the students have received letters back from the businesses they wrote to, and were very excited about that! We have been working on poetry and will be making a poetry book that will include the students' best poems.
Math - We have been learning about probability, dividing by two-digit numbers, multiplying fractions by whole numbers, dividing fractions, reducing mixed numbers and fractions to lowest terms, and most recently, writing the reciprocal of a fraction. The practice work helps to review all of the important lessons we have covered since it usually goes back and repeats concepts. Reminder: Tests come after every 10 lessons.
Spelling - Lesson 28 Students take a pre-test on Mondays and then we work all week on their packets, which inlcude spelling patterns along with three vocabulary words. The students are required to know how to both spell their vocabulary words and define them by Friday. Their spelling tests are on Friday and their packets are due on Friday.
Social Studies - We have just begun to learn about the American Revolution. More specifically the causes that led up to the colonial revolt against Britain.
Science - My class is learning about the human body with Mrs. Moler.
